10 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. – Proverbs 9:10
Live for any period of time and you are sure to ask the question of “calling”.
What am I to do?
Who am I meant to be?
What career should I choose?
What relationship(s) should I pursue?
For the Christ follower, there are rarely bad choices. We must be careful not to over spiritualize our decisions, but merely walk with Him as we choose. Yes, in many ways everything is spiritual, but we can have a confidence – yes, a holy boldness – in the renewed desires of our heart. When the saint is surrendered to the Lord, to the best of his or her ability, they can trust the commitments they make. After all, God is BIG. If He wants you to choose differently, He can always orchestrate His will.
We are to humbly “fear” God – a term that is too often misunderstood – as well as continue in our “knowledge” of Him. By “fear” it means to put Him first in deep awe and wonder. To “know” means to continue seeking His character and ways. Proverbs makes it clear that when we do this, we are granted the wisdom that only comes from our God. This wisdom sees humanity in its proper place to God’s grace. We don’t circumvent it, but repent and accept it in humble adoration. The more we learn about God, both His manner and mystery, the more wisdom becomes second nature. It is through this lens we see things as they really are and not how we wish them to be.
Chances are, you have decisions to make today. Some of them trivial, others more weighty. First, pursue the Lord and repent of any blockades. If you are pursuing Him, He will deliver. You are free to choose. The God of wisdom is with you.
