Trust Not Princes

8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes – Psalm 118:8-9

Is the Lord our refuge?

There is plenty in this world to place trust in. People, policy, and provision all seem trustworthy in the moment, but on a long enough time line, they all fail us. It is the nature of man to both seek a savior as well as to let each other down to pursue selfish gain. This is the perfect storm of heartbreak. There are many figures who come and go – ones that we invest trust in with hopes of deliverance. Perhaps this is why we love the cinema. Many have a larger than life protagonist who seeks some noble cause for the masses (i.e. any super hero movie). It is no coincidence that many recent movies have had a new anti-hero who is broken, but still fighting for redemption (i.e. Logan).

The truth is, we are all capable of tremendous acts of redemption, but will stumble in execution and longevity. We then must have the courage to place our trust in the unchanging Lord of man, for He alone knows the measure of days and carries the grace of sin. When we put faith in an elected official, we often blindly follow them, inexcusably, into the corruption of their spirit and our moral authority. We were not made to follow the created but the creator.

Today, bring your fear to the shade of His refuge.
