Justice

The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice;
    let the many coastlands be glad!
Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Fire goes before him
    and burns up his adversaries all around.
His lightnings light up the world;
    the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.   –
 Psalm 97:1-5

The world seems terribly unjust. Abuse of power, corruption, and crime dominate our national narrative. In these shaky times, it is normal to ask questions of God. It helps to remember that everything in this world is essentially upside down from the way it was intended to be. We look at our Lord’s throne and see righteousness and justice are it’s foundations. We can have comfort in His justice.

God not only prefers justice, but He exists in justice. As Christ-followers, we are to pursue this. It is not good enough to curse the darkness of injustice in this world, we must pursue His just light in every circumstance. Somewhere in time, Christians became political, often extolling profit and work ethic over justice and compassion (not to pick on the majority but to expose the narrative that is too often represented).

Godly justice is vengefully compassionate. Therefore, issues like police brutality, gender equality, and corporate greed are to be battled by Jesus people with ferocity. We are to shine light into the darkness no matter how unpopular we are to become. Yet, these issues are never to define us. While important, these are only symptoms of a greater disease.

Praise God He is on the throne and not us.
