I Groan For Heaven

23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. (Romans 8:23:25)

I groan. I groan for something more – something more real. I groan under the weight of a life that is lacking. There is a ever present pressure within us that longs for what we can not so readily witness. While the world spins with broken politics, pointless wars, and burdened people groups, the souls within us cry out for something greater. Even in the heart of the most devout believer, this restless spirit is waiting to break free. The chasm between the reality we live and the reality we hope for is not about faith levels but deep rivers of frustration with a world that can never satisfy. The more we walk with Jesus, the more this pain grows. The meaninglessness of the many distractions in this world become heavier, producing more discomfort as we look to the Son.

Our faith produces a present but invisible hope

This groaning points us to the greater. For we can never fully understand our savior if we do not first experience in depth that which He is saving us from. This distance between sin and redemption is where we spend our days but it is in grace that we make our bed. While the outside is perishing in the fog of deception, we are made alive under the shelter of a quiet God. These groanings are good for us for they direct our path. The saint longs for more because they have tasted the next world and seen that it is beyond compare. While we live out our days, we follow the gentle whisper of our God repeating “the better is coming”.

So on these days when it seems like life is spinning more than progressing, take heart. Be strengthened in what really matters – perhaps what only matters. This promise of redemption we have waiting for us. Wait patiently saint, your hope is coming.

Father protect us from this world. We are so easily discouraged and made numb by it’s declarations and deceptions – bring us hope today as we groan for more.
