There is a tension within. The mood has shifted in the last few months and is palpable. To those who are tuned in, the change is obvious. We live on shaky ground, not knowing what to expect or where the next fright will come from. The mass avalanche of news and tragedies overwhelms us.
This is not natural nor is it sustainable.
Recently, the school district I work for provided us with “guidance” on steps to take in case the federal government shows up to speak to our students. Essentially, it is an attempt to equip us for the possibility of legal kidnapping. This guidance advised bus drivers of steps to take if students get taken from the bus stop. I learned later that this is a tactic of ICE, to use children as a way of rounding up their scared and undocumented parents.
This is the world we now occupy. It has all been normalized, as if we are to be subservient. We have complete monsters leading our nation and a considerable amount of Americans who support them. In the face of such carnage, it is easy to turn into them.
To bully.
To troll.
To dehumanize.
But this is what they want. They have no values. No guiding principle beyond their own monetary benefit. To them, goodness is weakness and truth is only what serves their self-interest. All the nihilism within them is only encouraged when we lower our character to theirs. Yet, we cannot sit idly while the world burns.
So what do we do?
This is what it all revolves around. A tension that I, like many, are living in. There is a way out, even if it is not fully clear yet. It is found in action. In speech. In both quiet and abrasive protest. In not only doing good but being good. In a world of corruption, this is rebellion.
Like you, I’m waiting for clarification.
