Learning to Hear the Knock

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. – Rev. 3:20

Many times we are guilty of looking for grand signs to prove God is there. These often fall into categories of superstition more than they do in theology. Yet, there is nothing wrong with longing to know God intimately. All of us, regardless of where we are on the faith journey, want some type of assurance of a Godly presence or absence. What drives us to frustration is the unknown. We find ourselves in a state of limbo, our faith levels rise and fall with the matters of our day. Somedays we find it, and others we muster whatever we can to get through today. We are battered believers standing on hopeful ground.

We can often see God in the large things. Even in the current time we find ourselves in; with virus and storm, we can see Godly fingerprints. Yet, many times our savior works with a gentle knock. As a child of a large Creator who lives on the borders of our own understanding, we me must discipline ourselves in hearing the knock – in quieting the noise and distraction of our lives, and listen. Like with any relationship, our default is to grow weary and zone out instead of plugging in and finding refreshment.

Our lives are spent deeply intrenched in the physical. Everything we know is in front of us. When we hear the knock of Christ, and open slightly, our experience starts to change. Our vision becomes larger than circumstance and what we immediately see. A follower must let the Spirit keep us sharp to matters of the other side.

With the disciplining and quiet, it helps to remember the willingness and patience on the other side of the door. He waits and knocks in love. Christ is there, ready for our dinner with Him. As we stumble for the door, remember the wealth and depth of His character. May this motivate you in your search.
