Colorful Blocks and the Life We Build

46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” – Luke 6:46-49

The floors of my house are covered with diabolically sharp kids toys. Strewn across the Hotwheels and spatulas are random colorful blocks that are originally intended for building. Skyscrapers, zoos, and racetracks are all just a few joined blocks away. Of course, my son has yet to get the creative memo. His purpose for these are more destructive as he calculates the exact launch angle needed to hit his daddy in the face. Painful and hilarious, we have taken to affectionately calling him “Wreck-it-Reed”.

He has yet to learn that blocks are made for building.

This has resonance in our own lives as well. The events, job titles, and relationships we are handed are not for launching our egos and worth to our own end, but for building something of value.

What are we to do with seemingly unconnected blocks of our lives?

What are we building?

I am thinking a lot about legacy recently. I am at the age where the first half of my life is drawing to a close (God willing). I reflect on the remnants it has left behind, and I wonder if any of it will last. If I’m honest, I never expected to live this long and have no foolish assumption that I will live past today. Therefore, all I truly have is now – the legacy of this current moment.

Today, as we embark into a new set of 24, we can slowly sculpt away with purpose and intention. None of us will build perfectly, there are sure to be stops, starts, and bruised thumbs (and faces), yet we are constructing into a greater foundation of eternity.
