Lay Bare Our Soul

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!  –
Psalms 139:23-24

Perhaps there is no more vital a practice than to lay ourself bare before God. Truth is, it is impossible to hide anything from God. We spend countless time and energy hiding from those around us, but our Father sees through the face we show to the world.

He sees our ego.

He sees our masks.

He sees our hurt.

But we do not lay bare our souls before God for His benefit, but for our own. There is something incredibly freeing about showing our true face to a patient redeemer. This is the true mark of both spiritual maturity and growth, to not hide our “grievous” from our savior. This posture shows true faith in that we believe Him to be forgiver of all sin, and not merely the sin of others. There is a deep personalization Christ wishes us to have with forgiveness. It was my sin that put Him on the cross, and though He was killed for it, His resurrection proves I have a continued clean slate when I honestly confront the darkness within me.

lead me in the way”

We are in need of continued guidance. Our minds are prone to deceive ourselves, and our soul are prone to wander from the Truth of our sin the ultimate forgiveness purchased on Good Friday. Saints do not cease to struggle, but they recognize the Father even in the darkness of their decisions and in their falling short. Whatever the gap between me an the Father today, its distance is made up from the crucified and resurrected Christ.

Today, rest in this spiritual Truth
