22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. – Lamentations 3:22-23
This is one of those timeless passages that have been forever cemented into our Christian sub-culture. You can find it on bumper stickers, highlighted in Bibles, and wore on T-shirts. Being a part of this culture, I have seen this passage approximately 1.5 million times. Yet it wasn’t until last week that it’s meaning finally penetrated my thick head. After brushing my teeth and leaning over the sink, the quote caught my eye from the Hobby Lobby branded decorative sign my wife strategically put up.
I like to think of God’s mercy being boundless. In my messy life, it helps to comfort me knowing that whatever the day brings, I am covered by One who never condemns. As a person who always feels guilty of something – who always feels like he can never truly measure up – this is welcomed. It is a needed transition of the mind to wake up each morning with an intentional acceptance of a new grace. With the start of a new day – a new set of risks, absurdities, and challenges – His grace goes before us.
Grace
We overuse and under appreciate this spiritual truth. Grace is not simply a one time event, a one and done distribution at salvation. No, grace beats with a million pulsating hearts. It permeates every shadowed corner of the sinner’s soul. Grace is kinetic, never stagnates, and always astounds. Perhaps we hurt ourselves most when we fail to accept this divine gift. Maybe we offend God when we fail to understand all of it’s grandeur.
Today, rest in His mercy. Our Lord is humbly extravagant in His affections. Let grace be the warmth of your soul and the energy in your step.
