1 The Lord is my light and my salvation – so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? – Psalms 27:1
There is plenty to be afraid of in this life. Bankruptcy, public speaking, job loss . . . spiders. All are unique circumstances in this world that can lead deeper to fear or faith. The choice is ours. The truth is, there are many instances of fear that, given enough time, turn out to be the greatest instances of faith and joy. Time seems to heal many fears, or at least frame them into a different perspective than originally imagined.
There is a difference between protection from trouble and protection in trouble. Undoubtedly we will have danger and trying times (and spiders). A mature believer is the one who regardless of circumstances, can recognize His presence in the midst of trouble. He uses it to refine our soul and if we let it; to build our faith. Fear can be an engine to faith. Either positively or negatively, it shapes our theology.
The Psalmist starts with the term “light”. This is important to remember as we walk into fear’s darkness. Worldly fear thrives in uncertainty – in questions. But Christ shows us what could be when we question what is. He grants us a spiritual grit that turns over every rock and dark corner. This is salvation: seeing things from His eyes and enduring to a better ending.
Today, may grace win over your fears. May the intimidating shadows be muted by His presence. Let Him protect you. Let Him be God.
