8 Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues with injustice – Proverbs 16:8
I have been blessed with a nagging conscience. Throughout my life, it has haunted me when I fail to do what I ought to. While many times I wished I could perpetrate morally questionable acts, it centers me, reminding me of a better way. As I grow older, I have come to be thankful for such an echoing reminder. While it doesn’t always stop me from acting out of my lower desires, it does strongly urge me to make things right after the dust settles on my choices. God is said to reprove those He loves. This is an encouragement for me and for anyone who feels disciplined.
God puts great value in a better way of living. Integrity, character, and justice, all are traits He puts on high; there are few human qualities He wishes to refine more in us. Wealth, success, and even respect are all relative next to these. In many ways, it is more difficult and therefore more coveted, to be a person of humble integrity than it is to be monetarily successful. It is of the utmost importance that we tend to these values. Our default mode runs counter to these and therefore it takes a resolved strength to go against the current. Every day is used to test and cement these within our character.
How are we fostering these traits within us? Today, patiently take stock in your soul. Before you respond, examine the possible outcomes.
It’s Monday, may your coffee be strong and your conscience be relentless.
