Wisdom and the Family Business

6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7 he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. – Proverbs 2:6-8

Few topics in the Bible are touched on as much as wisdom. Entire books, such as Proverbs, are devoted to it as well as the teachings of Christ, both directly and indirectly are about wisdom. There is a certain guarantee God makes in regards to wisdom (James 1:5), that whoever would ask for it, shall receive it. It reminds us who has the final say. Wisdom points to who is in charge and who dictates the terms of practical living.

Recently, I have had a renewed desire for such wisdom. You would think as a pastor, this would be a constant prayer . . . or even that my prayer life would be a steady rivers, but no. Truthfully, I am no different than you. We all go through waves of devotion and are in constant need of who the wave crashes against. It is a stark reminder of who we are too, convincing us we are not as wise as we like to think.

I like to think of a call for wisdom as a stabilizer. When my devotional life is as messy as my life can be, when I call for direction from the father of lights, it sets me back to zero, reminding me of sonship. As “saints”, we have a new relationship with understanding. We have been adopted into the wisdom family and all of its rewards are now ours.

Today will have many challenges. You will be tempted to ride the wave or let the storm overtake you. Take some time to ask for direction. Your Father is both waiting and willing. Enjoy the benefits of the family business.
