4 am Teething and God’s Perfect Dawn

18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. 19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble – Proverbs 4:18-19

It is a little after 4am and I am awake. Actually, my infant son is awake and therefore so am I. His newly protruding teeth give way to thoughts of both God’s glory, and Adam’s failure. While I stand swaying back and forth with the sleepy consciousness of a new father, we both gaze outside to an ever growing morning. Slowly those things in our backyard which were just moments earlier hidden, have became recognized. Their silhouettes give way to form and matter as the sun, deliberate in its rising, makes the unknown known.

Morning is a perfect picture of His grace. It comes on slowly, washing away the former darkness, invading every corner of mystery until His inexplicable warming glow surrounds us. The righteous know this warmth well. They know it invades all that confuses and harms. Our duty is to merely chase the sun.

We all have those times of confusion. We find ourselves in distress, groaning for more, and though we have held up our end of this grace exchange, we wonder when the radiant morning will breakthrough. Times like these, we gaze out patio doors trying to make sense of ghostly shadows and plaguing doubts. We cannot yet see what the portrait will be. Yet, we trust in the morning, or better yet, the one who shapes it. We serve the conductor of natures greatest symphonies.

Your morning is coming. Regardless of what darkness is here, His light and timing will make way for something more real. This is redemption. Taking the shadows and giving them crystal clear precision. We no longer have to guess what the darkness is trying to so desperately suppress.

Dawn is coming.
