After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into the harvest. Go your way; behold I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. – Luke 10:1-3
Within our faith, we must work and rest in equal measure. Like in farming, a popular analogy for Jesus, there are times to plant and times to harvest. In our lives, there are seasons of great amounts of mental perspiration, and some where we must check out mentally in the name of survival. What we see in Luke 10 is a season of work. Jesus is sharing the amount of God work with His followers.
In fact, the amount of the miraculous work of God outnumbers those willing to partake in it.
There is so much God wishes to do, but not enough men and women to see it through. Every believer has a field. Every believer is called to work that field in some capacity. All that is needed is an open heart. He never says “pray earnestly for talented and called people”. He will take anyone. If you have a pulse, God is ready to use you to advance His cause. He equips on the fly through His on the job training.
We also see His distance. Jesus was going to go where the 72 were . . . eventually. They were going alone into a world hostile but in need. His command to “go” was enough to cover them by His Spirit. His presence was coming, but until then, they had to rely on each other. This is the duty of the Church – to pick up the tools necessary and till the soil.
There is plenty of God work to do
It doesn’t matter who you are or what you know
He is coming behind you
The harvest is there and it is good
Lean into the Church
This is the work strategy of our Lord
