18 He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.” 20 And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.” – Luke 13:18-21
Great things have small beginnings. It is here where they are passed over, disregarded, and overlooked in favor of the bright lights of the BIG. Yet it is the shadow of the expected that underdogs are born. They grow and thrive when the chips are stacked against them.
The Kingdom of God is like this.
Want proof?
You are currently in front of your computer or tablet or phone reading about a peasant from ancient Palestine. Over 2,000 years ago, He started a movement, like many others. And while leaders and influencers have come and went, His is stronger than ever. His message grew, mobilizing people from every country in the world. Billions of people have given their lives and resources to a cause that begun in the shadow of the Roman empire. Like leaven, it spread. Like the mustard seed, it continues to branch out, giving shade to the marginalized and overlooked.
His Kingdom is alive. It’s proliferation tells of the divine power behind it. No one movement is celebrated like this. Even those who antagonize the faith know His name.
Today, let the tradition carry you forward. Take heart that His message is true and His Kingdom is expanding. The Gospel can be summed up with one glorious phrase: God is with us.
