2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. – James 1:2-4
The words of James are never veiled. You would be hard-pressed to find another Biblical author who is more direct than he. These verses begin his letter, and like the rest of his prose, they do not fail at inciting a reaction. Often these words are used during struggle in an attempt to lift one’s spirits during the chaos of life. And while there is truth in this, we can often misuse the richness of what is written.
Perhaps James is speaking of joy within trials, not joy because of trials. One of the many benefits purchased for us by the cross is an enduring joy. This is not emotion that ignores life circumstance but an eternal grit that says regardless of circumstance, I have a forever joy. This is the joy that keeps an eye on the long game. It knows that eventually, in this life or the next, this present sadness will be flipped upside down by the shade of grace. Otherwise, Scripture would not talk about the spiritual discipline of mourning. Even Jesus knew of the great redemption coming from His death, yet He still grieved. Grief is spiritual. Those who spout pithy sayings of ignorance fail to see the true condition of life. To them, suffering is an abstraction not something real enough to touch and to be forever conquered by our Savior.
Father, grant us joy regardless of circumstance. May we cling to this as we question and mourn. Give us an enduring joy that speaks of the wonders of your grace. May the way we struggle be an attraction to those outside of your mercy. Amen
