5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth – Matthew 5:5
Redemptive conflict can bring incredible peace. Yet, unchecked conflict easily destroys relationships, careers, and ultimately planets. As followers of Jesus, we are to be not only carriers of peace, but carriers of conflict resolution. While many of us run from disagreement, followers put it in the correct context, standing up when needed and laying down when not. The “meek” go out of their way to not be offended. These are the ones easily lost in disagreement, yet they are not invisible. The characteristics of God found in man are always attractive and ultimately highly respected. Yet in the grasp of heavy argument, these are often the first values to be disregarded as we hold tight to our flesh and the desire to be “right”. While the world is eating itself alive, the meek will inherit the land left after wars and accusations.
It is not that the meek do not have opinions, they just know how insignificant many of them are. They keep the main thing, the main thing. They seek understanding of other worldviews with gentleness and empathy. Perhaps this is only understood and attained by the remembrance of who they speak for. It is no longer to be my worldview, but His worldview. My opinion then becomes inconsequential.
Lord may we hold to your Truth tighter than we hold to our opinions. Teach us gentleness in how we talk with others. May we be the most empathetic and with this meekness, may souls come alive with your Gospel. Kill in me what is not of you.
