3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths . . . – 2 Timothy 4:3-4
The message of Christ is refreshingly clear. It is and has always been and therefore we attempt to do as humans do and complicate and pollute its ever stable message. It is so easy, even for the best of us, to grab a hold of “new” teaching. Clinging to Gospel stability requires discipline, especially in a culture that loves the next great trend. We must be careful not to let our passion define what we receive and what we disregard.
Bestsellers, motivational speakers, and newly discovered texts will always rise and fall with the tide of public curiosity. Believers are to have a bold, and perhaps boring, take on all of this.
Is your truth true?
We stubborn sinners grab so tightly at what we want to believe, often disregarding what is true. We must ask daily for the Spirit to examine our souls, purging anything in opposition to the saving work of Christ. When we are led by what we want to believe, what we do believe tends to be believable. In Jesus, there is freedom, Truth, and an easy burden. We can trust what we believe when it has the traces of simplicity and inclusiveness, and perhaps most importantly a immovable center in God. There is nothing secret nor exclusive in His way. His message is for all from now to the glorious end when we will be united to the One True God.
Spirit, examine my heart. Root out any trend, doctrine, or attitude that opposes you. Keep me diligent in your truth. May I rest in Gospel simplicity and favor those who do the same. Bring us voices of clarity and encouragement to strengthen our faith and movement. Amen
