30 He must become greater; I must become less. – John 3:30
Are there any greater explanations of the life of faith than this? The words of John the Baptist ring true to this day for those who wish to take this journey seriously. The progressive nature of this statement, coupled with the depth of who John was in relation to intimacy with Christ, grants us a picture of faith that never arrives. If John is stating this for his benefit, then we are to safely assume that it is for ours as well. As a rock star of the faith, John was at an entirely different level than you or I. This could be the most encouraging or discouraging thing about faith – that we have never completed its call.
A faith unchecked, even for a brief moment, can easily slip into hedonism. There is a pull within every soul, back to the bottom of non-commitment. Once we recognize this daily battle, we must be willing to let Christ examine us daily under the breath of His grace.
“Is He truly greater than I today. In my thoughts, actions, and speech?”
If the answer is no, it means we are cloaking our shameless and insidious habit of self-promotion. While our faith is purchased for us through the grace of another, we are to take our life seriously and not settle for “cheap grace”. It is when we feel the most jaded and burnt out, that we must learn to lean into this grace more fervently for the greatest of rewards lay on the other side.
He must become more. More in our life. More in our fear. More in our reality.
He is more.
