This Is What To Weigh

1 The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.

2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.

3 To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

Proverbs 21:1-3

Yesterday we spoke on the first verse of one of my favorite Proverbs. Today and tomorrow I wish to continue to unpack these in hopes of applying them to our lives and faith.

If Proverbs 21:1 speaks of the direction of our heart, then verse 2 deals with the weight of our heart. In this verse we hear of God’s eternal scale. In order for us to be His, we must have a considerable amount of substance and girth. The integrity of our heart is to weigh heavy. It is easy to fool people into thinking we are right but it is a different matter entirely to reveal a humble heart. We know too well how easily it is corrupted to ring hallow within our guarded chest. God sees past our good deeds and accolades to what truly drives us. We can be no help to His Kingdom until He is the one directing our motivations.

Of course we are to fear the scale of man. When we hear of God weighing the matters of our lives, our humanity can often cower in terror. While we are to revere and take notice of the demands of our Lord, we must not forget the weight of the cross that is to both rule and replace our darkened heart. When we openly regard our opinions as lite and of little value, we then see the scales tip. We must remember that the undying condition of our hearts are ruled by the direction of sin. Keeping guard, we are to ask our savior to help us start afresh daily so that our hearts may be burdened in grace.

Today, where could you be wrong? How is your heart?
