Surrender Control

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (Matthew 6:24)

Why is it that we are so prone to wanting to control everything? In verse 24 we see Jesus contrast two things. The first being Himself, which no man can control, and the second being money, which all men believe they can control and fight to do so. In order to serve God and to see Him for who He truly is as Lord and King, we must live in constant surrender. This is to be the first order of business for the saint every morning before their weary feet hit the cold morning ground. This is truly an anti-human action. Money of course is something we spend countless time worrying and manipulating. If we are not careful, our attempts to control can suffocate our call to surrender.

It is important to point out here that “surrender” does not mean passivity. On the contrary. A surrender to God means saying “Yes” to our reorganized purpose and getting out of the way of His control. We still get the opportunity that grace provides for us to partner with Him to complete great works as we are each called to a greater purpose beyond our control.

“Money” here could mean anything we try to control or put before God. It could just as easily say “You cannot serve God and career” or “You cannot serve God and popularity”. Today, meditate on what you are prone to try and control. Pray for the God of our worries to embolden us in courageous surrender.

Lord, you alone are God of all. You control all we see and experience and we get to partner with You in a great work. Please help us to lay down the need to try and control. We surrender our hearts to you.
