What Cleveland And Jesus Have In Common

31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one – Psalm 109:31

I love an underdog. Living in Cleveland, it is pretty much wired into you at an early age. We love the story of those written off or under promoted proving everyone wrong. Cities like New York and Pittsburg don’t seem to get it. They are use to winning; they expect it. We don’t do too much winning in these parts, so when we do, it is especially unifying.

This same principle plays greatly into our faith. We don’t expect to win, we expect to work. We see Jesus as the ultimate underdog. Wrote off and killed off, He comes back in true heroic fashion. His ministry on earth was geared towards the outcast – the underdog. He seemed to pass by the successful ones to drive directly into the heart of the needy.

Where you find the needy, you find God. The key is to see yourself as needy. Many of us are pros at fooling ourselves into thinking we are in better shape than we are. Jesus is hindered by the spirit within us that declares we are fine. The more we see our story as that of an underdog, the more Jesus will transform us. He is celebrated in these stories.

Today, boast in your need. Celebrate your ultimate reliance on God.
