Why I Curse In Traffic

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he my become wise. – 1 Corinthians 3:18

Do you ever grade yourself? Do you sit in the car and develop a point system to determine your growth as a human person . . . or is it only me who does? I often think of those who persevere through wild amounts of life turbulence to achieve greatness, leaving a lasting mark on careers, families, and the world. Honestly, I struggle deciding which one of six-hundred t-shirts to wear on a given day. Chances are, I am not winning any Nobel Peace Prizes anytime soon.

I think my proudest moment of growth in personal maturity might just be when I can patiently sit in traffic without concocting new compound curse words

The truth is, we are all a mess (not sure if this makes me feel better or worse). As I mature (hopefully), I learn that the boundaries we place between us and them are purely works of insecure imagination. There truly are no them, but only a ton of us. We have large plots of common ground with both the best and worst of society. I think this maybe a key spiritual realization that Jesus wishes us to embrace. When you are able to see the sin in others as ever present and possible in your own life, you can further understand the unworthy grace poured upon you. Likewise, when we see ourselves in those who achieve greatness, we can start to have faith that in us rests the same power to do the unimaginable.
