14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. 18 I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen (Philippians 4:14-20)
“14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble . . . giving and receiving . . . I am well supplied” The church here got it. They saw a need, and they met it. The church of Philippi was a mixed bag. A wealthy woman named Lydia and a common jailer were two of the colorful characters that took refuge there. It was a unique blend of economic, social, and genders all united by a passionate faith. Their purpose was tied to their passion. The church leaders called attention to a need, the people prayed and leveraged what they had, and the church stewarded it properly. In fact, Philippians is unlike any other letter in the New Testament. It is a “thank you” note to a church on mission. The congregation did not give to the church, but gave through the church. This is the only way that cultures are shaken for the Gospel.
“19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus . . .” Paul knew how God worked. Notice the “my” God part. There is an intimacy here. Through time and experience, Paul had seen the character and habit of His savior in a personal way. He was assuring a church that sacrificed with such earthly resource that their blessing would be deep through the richness of God. This was not TV evangelism. This was not “give to get blessed” but “give to know more of God’s character”. Strategically invest in matters close to God’s heart and you will be partnering with the miraculous movement of God.
I would say that’s a solid investment.
Praise God our Lord is anything but frugal. He lavishes resourceful grace upon His children as they look to imitate His compassion.
