6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:6-7)
The Way
The inventor of the GPS is a genius. Rarely does a week go by that I do not rely on its incredibly accurate direction. More and more, I ignore memorizing a way to go and simply trust its turn by turn navigation.
Yet, there are days I still ignore it.
“Why are you taking me this way?” I utter before embarking on a more improvisational journey. As you can imagine, this stubborn attempt to trust my own internal GPS often ends in deep frustration. No matter how many times my phone has proved faithful, I still believe I know a better way.
Is this not like our journey with Christ? He has proven the way many times throughout our walk, yet we so easily give it up in favor of what we think we know. Sometimes it ends in disaster, but many times it can be a draw. The true tragedy of going it alone is that we detach from the one who saved us and knows us better than we know ourselves. When we go our own way, we miss out on deep intimacy and friendship. The true mark of a Christ – follower is the discipline to tread His way, even when it seems counter to our own intuition.
True faith is refined one shadowed step at a time.
Lord, thank you for your Way. Give us the courage to trust you and not rely on our stubborn inner map. Humble us to greater intimacy with you.
