This week in “I Am” we will be reflecting on Jesus as our Good Shepherd from Psalms 23
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever. -Psalm 23:5-6
It is easier to have a meal in front of your enemies, when you have a intimidating shepherd at your side. Not only does he provide a meal for his sheep, but he protects from the troubles of this world. Our shepherd is the only one that makes demons tremble.
You anoint my head with oil . . . this is more significant than we realize. The oil showed who belonged to who. It also kept bugs and pests away from the sheep as they grazed. The oil was a protection as well as an identifier. The shepherd took extra measures to guard against that which could aggravate and harm the sheep. In this we see his cup of mercy overflow. His protection and love is great. This is grace upon grace. The mercy of God goes with us from day to day. There is no shaking it off or displacing it, for it is the gift of the cross. Not only do we get to be with Him in life united in death, but we are provided the honor of dwelling in His spirit for all our days. Good or bad. Feared or secured. The Good Shepherd is with us.
Lord, you are so patient and constant. Teach me to trust you even in chaos. You are the great warrior we can depend on. Thank you for fighting for us.
