Romans 6:1-14 The next few days we will be examining Holy Week through Romans 6
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (Romans 6:6)
The practice of history urges us to look back in order to gain a deeper understanding of what is ahead of us. It is our all too human flaw to forget the past. In our search for new, we forget that which is old.
“our old self was crucified” Many times we bring up the past to make us feel worse. Regret, shame, foolishness, all calling cards of a improper examination of the past. The death of Christ put this all to death.
“body of sin . . . brought to nothing” It is the death of Christ which brought your sin out of the darkness and exposed it for what it is. It was this same death which brought it to nothing. No longer does it have power over you. Resurrection only occurs for the redeemed not the sinful. That life is over.
“no longer be enslaved” It is crucial we remember what Christ saved us from – that old self which constantly sought to end you. The Holy transfer from death to life has purchased you an incredible freedom that surpasses your ability to sin. No longer are you defined by your past.
Today, remember who you would be without Christ. Take a moment to reflect on your “old self”. Let that incredible reality paint your future with a hope redeemed.
Lord, thank you for what you saved me from. Forgive me of the times I fail to live to my full redeemed potential. Continue to walk beside me as I create more and more distance from that old way of being.
