The Good Promise of Mind Control

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

This is an incredibly challenging promise from God. How can all things work for our good in a world of brokenness and deferred dreams? I mean, we all know plenty of Christ followers who seemed to lose in this world. Many who didn’t receive their share of glory within the walls of this life. Perhaps we need to challenge our definition of this word “good”.

Christ never promises us an easy life, but He does promise us victory. As soon as the first nail went into His wrist on the cross, we were delivered from the confines of this world. Most mature believers would agree that the narrative of His life was good. This however did not mean the end of tension or conflict. His victory was bought for us through blood and tears. Yet, this is a snapshot of that which is truly good.

Some of my favorite movies have incredible conflict – this is what makes a story great. The best characters are those who have an indestructible belief that carries them to the final scene. They believe that something will miraculously work out and are able to look past their circumstances to the finality. It is not that they don’t find discouragement and conflict, but they are able to put it into a context in their mind that pushes them forward.

Today, hold to the courageous belief that you are “called according to His purpose“. Let go of false optimism, and cling to a Holy realism that God indeed is present and moving in this moment of your life.

Lord, thank you for working things for good, even if we fail to fully recognize it. We know that you are good, and therefore you will write a phenomenal story with our lives. Help us to think this way – train our minds to listen to you over any other voice.
