3 God’s will is for you to be holy . . . 7 God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. 8 Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. (1 Thessalonians 4:3,7-8)
Follow Jesus for any length of time and the question comes up. “What is God’s will for my life?” It’s a fair question that comes from a heart that wishes to please God. However, it might not be the best place to invest our focus. Behind this question is the subconscious belief that maybe God can’t override our decisions and that He relies solely on our ability to make good choices. Recently I heard a pastor shed some light on this:
“God cares more about the WHO than He does about the DO”
He went on to explain how God is more concerned with your character and who you are becoming than He is what we actually do. Out of this Christ centered character, we are then free to move and decide how we wish. As Augustine said: “Love God, then do what you wish”. We are free to choose without fear of offending God. Walking with Christ always leans toward freedom in everything. This was purchased for us at the cross. He doesn’t want us to live in constant fear under the fog of destiny. The best questions are character based. So the more important question hits us:
Who are you becoming?
Does your soul love God as much as your decisions do? To be “holy” means to be different. You are to swim counter to the stream of this world and set yourself apart from the masses. May your decisions be based in a love and desire to please God before it ever is to please man. Walk in confidence saint, you are free.
