What Five Teens Taught Me

worship-student-first-night

Last night in our student ministry we launched a worship band. It doesn’t seem like much, but I have been reflecting on everything leading up to them taking the stage and am incredibly blessed. God is good. It has been a two year struggle to get this going, not to mention our incredibly gifted drummer was forced to drop out two weeks before we were all set. Somehow, God’s grace intervened.

It’s incredible to think how much God is involved in the life of youths. Honestly, our savior has a preferred people and those are always on the bottom – the outcast. Students understand this for they live in a social hierarchy of the worst order. Sunday we practiced for the last time and I made sure to explain how God ordained them, with all their imperfections and struggles, for this moment. They were to be the band we kicked everything off with because God favors them. How revolutionary would it be if all believers and especially teens felt this way? That God was orchestrating events to give them a voice and a movement to rally behind. These kids are all from different background and friend groups. They are messy. They are in the fog of growing up. But God favors them, and in that there is incredible strength and purpose.

On a cold Wednesday evening, five teens had the courage to go onstage in front of their peers and declare a risen savior. If they can do that, we certainly can make it to the weekend.

Lord, thank you for using the unexpected to do great things. Thank you that our social standing has nothing to do with our purpose. We love you who loves the unlikely. Give us the courage we need for today.
