3 When my enemies turn back,
they stumble and perish before your presence.
4 For you have maintained my just cause;
you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment. (Psalm 9:3-4)
What is your “just cause”? That thing that that makes your heart race and your dreams come alive. I’m convinced that as saints, we all have a cause that He so graciously and hauntingly places deep within our heart. For many, it takes awhile to articulate and express, but it is there nonetheless. It seems undoable. Seems like the world’s odds are stacked against you and this is right where God wants you. For if you could do it on your own, then there would be no need for a deep spiritual connection with the One who’s resources are unlimited. He maintains it, not out of the content of our character, but the depth of His own.
And there will be opposition. All great stories have a villain. Otherwise, how would we know who the hero is or if they are honestly committed to their cause? The evil we face makes the goodness pure and our purpose pop with a strange quality the world is drawn to. This “just cause” can be anything, but it must cost you something. It must be a burden at times and it must challenge you to something greater than you would typically settle for on your own. And perhaps most importantly, we must understand that it is our Lord who maintains it. The battle is His.
Lord, provide me with a cause that rises me above the immediate. Call me to something greater.
