Laughter is Spiritual

Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)

It has been awhile since I enjoyed my life. The grind of the everyday coupled with restless nights, make for a mundane existence if not careful. Yet this should never be. Our God wishes for us to “delight” in life, no matter how stressful, as we delight in Him. Perhaps He is to be our catalyst of joy. It is counter to how culture views our faith when we laugh in the presence of God. It is a cultural belief that fun sprints from faith in favor of stern commitment. But who would want this? Is not our Lord the one who invented humor? Does He not enjoy creation?

Sometimes the greatest act of devotion is whispered through laughter

Vibrant faith is attractive to those around us. It fulfills the great commission when we delight in the few years we have on this earth but it must always start in deep delight with our Lord, the true source of all lasting joy. In a world that is broken and seemingly meaningless, true carefree delight is needed as a spiritual discipline. Notice that as we delight, He gives or births desires into our once restless hearts. All of a sudden we long to heal the hurting instead of acquiring more for ourselves. Our priorities shift to the deeper things of life and this all starts when we enjoy our creator.

Today, enjoy your life. Filter the turmoil of your day through the carefree spirit of a life unhindered by sin. Grace makes joy attainable. Learn to love this life, however short, for it is not here to stay.
