Bob Feller and Jesus

But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ (Philippians 3:7-8)

When I was younger, I held my Bob Feller signed baseball in the highest regard. As arguably one of the greatest pitchers ever, Bob was revered for his integrity as much as for his skill. Plus he played for the Cleveland Indians. While I know it was simply a ball I found in the trunk of my car while I scrambled to get it signed, it wasn’t the ball that is significant but the signature of someone of utmost adoration and fame.

While we all have valuable things on this planet, it is our relationship with Christ that we have to hold above all temporal gains. In fact, it is our faith that gives our earthly achievements and possessions value. Yet, like my baseball, we are not of value until we are signed by our creator. When people look at this busted shell of a life, do they see the signature of greatness? Do we hold this in the highest regard?

Christ is not to be an “add-on” but the main thing

We must filter our actions, relationships, and media choices through our relation to Christ. He grants us a new perspective and urges us to assign value with even the most trivial of things. Our gravest of mistakes as followers is when we act autonomous from our relationship with Christ.

Today, what is your prized possession? What filters the experiences of your day? Whose signature is of most value?

Lord, be our treasure. Thank you for giving the experiences of our life value.
