18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing (Proverbs 12:18)
“I don’t have a filter, I just say what ever comes to mind” I remember my friend saying years ago as I tried not to point out the errors in this. I am sure you or people you know have this same perspective on communication. As if they owe the world every fleeting thought, no matter how aggressive or ignorant. Yet, we are all surely slaves to our tongues. What is often easily found in others is gently dismissed in ourselves. One look on social media will prove this point – people love rash words.
If we are to live like Christ, then holy silence must be practiced. If we are to be anything, it is to be thoughtful and intentional. The great redemption of Christ means that even the most hurtful devices – such as the tongue – can be recycled to bring the calmest of healing. Again, this is against our nature. It is something to be fought for.
It is interesting to me that the most silent among us are often viewed as the most intelligent.
Today, be intentional with your words. Before speaking ask “does this need said? who will it better?” One word can either reinforce or betray your faith and testimony. The stakes are high saint. Live like your words matter.
