Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song (Psalm 149:1)
We all sing sometimes. Our arena is often a car, a shower, or an abandoned aisle at a Wal-Mart. We all carry a tune with us even if we lack the skill or capacity to carry a tune. Somehow, we believe that we can nail “Sweet Caroline” if we only try hard enough. One stupid (or awesome) thing I do, is take a common song and switch the lyrics to what I am currently doing – whether it’s making eggs, washing the bathtub, or brewing coffee. Essentially, I am creating a new song.
Music has a huge place in church history. The Psalms are mostly songs and still find it’s way into modern worship jams. Today, almost all church services have some sort of music accompaniment.
Why?
Because music makes us vulnerable and uninhibited. We are forced to express groaning inside us, no matter how mundane or trite. There is something in melody that our soul finds relief. Your life is a song to be lifted to the Lord. Today, create something new for your father. Today is a new day that demands a new melody for a God who makes all things new with each sunrise. I bet you have something to be thankful for, even in the shadow of today. Sing of it with your words and actions today. It’s okay if your timing is off.
