Our God is Fear

A common theme in Scripture is the notion that we should not be “anxious” nor shall we “worry”. I was reminded of this the other day while listening to the radio. A local news station was running a promo teasing their 11’o clock special on how YOUR kids could be recruited into ISIS. Apparently, this is a real problem in Ohio that needs dealt with (but of course only after the headlines and weather). Now, I don’t know of the accuracy of this statement – nor do I care – but I was interested in the spirit of fear that seems to dominate the world around us. Minus Christ, we are all naked and afraid. It is this idea of “us” versus “them” that wins out over the Gospel. This is so because while the voice of Christ is subtle and mysterious, while fear is always loud, naive, and boastful. There is something about fear that calls to our lesser selves and if we are not careful, there will be a whole lot more of “them” to be afraid of.

It’s fear that drives us as a country. Elections, WebMD, and CNN tickers keep us up to date on what should consume us as well as what precautions we can take to save – or isolate – ourselves. Fear has become our idol and worry our god.

But this doesn’t have to be so. Culture always runs counter to the hope of Christ. Once we meet Jesus, the amount of things to worry about remain constant, yet we know the only One strong enough to usher fear into its grave.

Faith is the anecdote of fear.

So today, amidst negative politicians, controversial bathroom laws, and teen ISIS recruiters, relax. Be still and remember who is God. Now and forever, his reign never ends.
