105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)
We have been talking about the “journey” in the office lately. It seems to be very in style to lift this over the destination. Phrases like “enjoy the journey” and “not all who wander are lost” have became rallying cries of this generation. While there is a certain romantic wanderlust that I find appealing, we must never boil down our life philosophy to a trendy phrase.
I remember receiving the great fortune to travel to Cambodia twice. The 20 plus hours spent in airports and on planes were not necessarily enjoyable and by the second trip were completely devoid of nostalgia. In that case, it was the destination.
In faith, we can easily be so focused on the destination – heaven or hell – that we become no good on earth. Jesus spoke more about the journey than the destination. And while many believe God has a “plan” for their lives, I think one of the greatest gifts he has given us is freedom in the journey. Notice in the above verse how his word is a light. It illuminates the journey but isn’t the journey itself. It gives wisdom and direction but doesn’t plot our steps. Many saints fearfully hide behind a created god who dictates direction instead of embracing the freedom to blaze their own trail towards his Kingdom.
Today, know that if you are in Christ, you are free. A destination is coming sooner than you can expect. Remember this and embrace a journey of freedom lit by his grace.
