NPR Commute

4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev. 21:4)

Every morning I have a routine. Wake, breakfast, shower, and drive. The drive is always accompanied with NPR as I scramble to make sense of the early morning news. Casually the reporter mentions an attack, natural disaster, or human mishap with the number of casualties. The reporter quickly moves on, perhaps out of a loss of meaning or perhaps wanting to comment on a circus election. Death is handled with confusion. Unfortunately, there is always another headline, another attack, another tragedy.

Meditate on the weight of this verse: “death shall be no more”. Instead of it looming, ever ready to take the best of us so coldly, it lays not simply powerless but nonexistent. Jesus is the only thing that can triumph over this cold grave. We must recognize the counter cultural idea that in him alone, there is hope. A hope that transcends the promises of a healthier, slimmer version of yourself or a heftier retirement.

How I wish for the soundtrack of my commute to change. Today, let us pray for a Revelation 21 drive to work.
