Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits (Psalm 103)
Psalm 103 has recently been one of my favorite pieces of Scripture. There is so much about life and the identity of God cushioned between its few verses. The author’s focus is always on something higher than circumstance and the everyday. Many times in the Bible we see words like “remember” and “forget not”. Scripture has an incredible handle on who we are. Prone to forget and wander, we must not ever forget the benefits of following Christ. This is how we know his character. If as a Father, he gives generously – protecting and providing – then we can trust his goodness. The benefits of this life are never meant to be an end, but a beginning call to fix our eyes on the One who gives freely. In his goodness, he drives us closer. Gifts lead to intimacy and that is the greater benefit – knowing him. I would say, if your life is not better in following Christ, then pursue the world instead. There is a peace amidst the chaos of the everyday when we put our trust in him. Life is not easier but more meaningful.
Today, forget not the benefits of following Christ. Write them down and meditate on his goodness. This is worship.
