John 14: No Longer Orphans

(Read John 14 First)

18 I will not leave you as orphans (John 14:18)

Regardless of current circumstance, God is with us. He is a God of deep intimacy and not distance. As believers, we have been adopted into the family of God. What a relief it is to rest in the unending presence of God in our daily grinds.

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things. . .

The Spirit of God is with us from the moment of salvation. His work is mysterious but practical. He promises to teach us. Left to ourselves, we are incapable of knowing how to follow God. As a patient guide, he teaches us the mysteries of God and how to leverage our lives for his glory.

and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you

The Spirit reminds us of the works of God we are so prone to forget in the face of struggle.  He serves as a constant reminder of who and whose we are. It is so easy to get caught up in the demands and fears of today, but the backwards Kingdom of our Lord is not without presence and power. Where has God moved in your life? Do you keep a journal of his provisions? You should.

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you

The Spirit provides peace. While the world around us moves from conflict to conflict, his peace reigns. This peace is present amongst struggle – it overwhelms us. Though our lives fall to pieces, his peace will reign. The peace of Christ is active, stubborn, and unrelenting. It is the peace that compelled our Lord to go to the cross with confidence and resurrect in glory three days later. This peace is yours. Through him, you can face the cross in your life with the bold confidence of a looming Easter Sunday.

Pray: Thank you for your Spirit. We don’t fully understand it but we know it is alive in us as we follow you. Teach us to hear his voice amidst the chaos and doubt in our lives. Give us the strength to act on its promptings. Teach us, remind us, and bring peace. Set our lives on fire and may they burn daily for your glory. We love you. Amen
