John 4: A Simple Call

(Read Chapter 4)

“7A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” John 4:7

Much has been said about those from Samaria. They were outcasts. They weren’t church folk. Yet, this is exactly who Jesus was interested in. Jesus illustrates his process of redemption through her. He engages her, challenges her, asks her to move, and sets her loose.

“Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony” (v.39)

Jesus started with a simple request, “give me a drink”, and ended with a revival. On the surface, we might not see the connection between these two. We fail to see how the ordinary obedience of saints can unleash the extraordinary movement of God. But it is in the simple that God moves most. The everyday expression of a mundane life comes alive under his direction. Nothing is wasted.

What is Jesus asking of you? What is your “give me a drink” moment?

More than likely it is not a giant move to a foreign mission field or a change of career. Perhaps it looks more like encouragement of a co-worker, engaging a bank teller, or extended patience to your family. It is here in the little things that God looms largest. Big things have small beginnings.

Pray: Lord, open my heart to your gentle calling. I understand that you are alive in the everyday and I long to see your movement, not for my glory but for your’s. Teach me how to be faithful in the little things. May I love my family, friends, and enemies well today. Meet other people’s needs by me today. Use me father. Amen
